IEEE SPS Undergraduate Thesis Competition
The IEEE SPS Undergraduate Thesis Competition was created to help undergraduate students in
Sri Lanka develop and showcase their research skills in signal processing. This competition
provided a platform for students to demonstrate their technical knowledge and research abilities
to industry professionals and academics.
The competition started with an open call for undergraduate students across Sri Lanka.
Applicants submitted summaries of their research, which were evaluated based on originality,
methodology, real-world impact, and clarity. A panel of IEEE SPS experts and university faculty
reviewed 30 submissions, selecting 15 finalists for the final round based on the quality of their
research and presentation skills.
The final event took place at SLTC Research University in Padukka, Sri Lanka. The venue was
set up with poster presentation boards, allowing students to visually showcase their research. A
panel of academic and industry experts from SLTC, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and
University of Moratuwa evaluated the presentations, engaged in discussions with students, and
provided valuable feedback.
On the event day, the 15 finalists presented their research in poster format, explaining their work
to the expert panel. The judges assessed the quality of research, clarity of presentation, depth of
knowledge, and students' ability to answer questions. This interactive evaluation gave students
direct exposure to professionals, offering them a rare learning opportunity.
A major highlight was the panel discussion on "Telco AI: Bringing AI into 5G and Beyond."
Experts from telecommunications and AI shared insights on the role of machine learning in next-
generation networks, inspiring students to explore cutting-edge research areas.
