Turning Bugs into Strengths | CyberSec 5.0 by IEEE
CS SL Chapter
02 July, 2025

Rather than merely representing a flaw, a software bug can serve as a critical opportunity to enhance system security. This perspective was emphasised during ‘CyberSec 5.0’, a virtual session held on 2 July, 2025, at 7:30 PM. Organised by the IEEE Computer Society Sri Lanka Chapter in collaboration with the IEEE Sri Lanka Cybersecurity Group, the event offered valuable insights into the proactive role of cybersecurity in addressing software vulnerabilities.
Mr. Samitha Madhusanka (Senior Security Consultant at EY) guided the audience through practical talks and live demonstrations, showing how penetration testing intentionally searches and finds hidden risks before attackers find them. His live demos showed how fixing these flaws turns ‘bugs’ into tools for stronger security. The session explored AI-driven cyber threats, emerging hacking techniques, and methods used by attackers to bypass security defenses. Participants gained practical knowledge on identifying these threats and enhancing their protective measures, thereby contributing to strengthening Sri Lanka’s position in global digital security.
