What if a bug isn’t just a problem, but a chance to improve security? CyberSec 5.0 proved exactly that on July 2, 2025, when the IEEE Computer Society Sri Lanka Chapter and IEEE Sri Lanka Cybersecurity Group hosted an inspiring Zoom session at 7:30 PM. Mr. Samitha Madhusanka (Senior Security Consultant at EY) guided the audience through practical talks and live demonstrations, showing how penetration testing, the practice of deliberately probing systems for vulnerabilities, helps reveal hidden weaknesses before actual attackers find them. This hands on approach turned traditional “bugs” into valuable “features” that make digital systems stronger and safer.

The event explored a wide range of topics, including the latest AI-driven cyber threats that are changing how hackers operate, as well as modern attack techniques used to bypass defenses. Participants, from students to experienced IT professionals, learned how to recognise these threats and apply better defense strategies. By spotlighting penetration testing and discussing real-world scenarios, CyberSec 5.0 raised awareness about the continuous need for vigilance and innovation in cybersecurity. The session empowered participants with practical knowledge to help protect organizations, critical infrastructure, and personal data across the country, strengthening Sri Lanka’s position in the global digital security arena.

A lively career panel with Mr. Dhammika Marasinghe, Mr. Heshan Mallawaarachchi, Ms. Warunika Hippola, and Mr. Manodya Nabadawewa, moderated by Ms. Tharaka Munasinghe, gave advice on connecting what you learn in university with real jobs. Mr. Yohan Joseph (Vice Chair – Branch Engagement Subcommittee, SLSAC) concluded with a motivating call for youth to act and drive community change.

Precision Sparks Innovation | Analog IC Student Design Contest 2025 by IEEE SL Section

In a groundbreaking moment for Sri Lanka’s electronics education, the IEEE CASS CEDA Joint Sri Lanka Chapter, in collaboration with Skill Surf, launched the Analog IC Student Design Contest 2025. This pioneering event challenged student engineers to design low-voltage, low-area operational amplifiers for low-frequency analog signals (1–10 kHz), bringing real-world IC design into the classroom.

What made this contest truly distinctive was its adoption of the open-source SKY130 PDK, offering participants a hands-on experience typically exclusive to industry professionals. Open to both undergraduate and graduate students, the competition welcomed individuals or teams of two, with at least one member from a Sri Lankan institution.

The contest kicked off with registration closing on July 25th, 2025, followed by a demo workshop on August 2nd. Final designs are set for submission by August 22nd, marking a journey that blends creativity, precision, and technical excellence.

This first-of-its-kind initiative not only tested engineering skill but also celebrated the spirit of innovation at the circuit level. By engaging with open-source tools and pushing design boundaries, participants are helping to cultivate Sri Lanka’s growing VLSI and analog design community, nurturing a new generation of engineers ready to shape the future of technology.

IEEE Sri Lanka Section Secures IEEE R10 MDC Grant for Membership Growth Initiative
In July 2025, the IEEE Sri Lanka Section was awarded USD 400 by the IEEE Region 10 Membership Development Committee (MDC) as part of its initiative to boost membership growth and retention across the Asia-Pacific region. This funding opportunity, launched in June 2025, invited IEEE sections to propose innovative and impactful strategies to enhance member recruitment and engagement.

Out of 12 proposals received, Sri Lanka was selected among six sections to receive support, underscoring the strength and creativity of its plan to implement physical member engagement activities. The grant will fund initiatives running from 23 July to 25 November 2025, designed to enrich the member experience and encourage sustained involvement.

The evaluation process prioritized clarity of objectives, feasibility, creativity, potential impact, and alignment with Region 10 goals. Other sections awarded include Islamabad, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Pune, and Delhi, reflecting a collective commitment to proactive membership development across the region.

This recognition affirms the Sri Lanka Section’s dedication to fostering a vibrant, connected IEEE community. The grant will enable meaningful member interactions and support the Section’s broader goals of sustainable growth and retention through well-designed, engaging activities.

Innovate Across Disciplines | MERCon 2025 – Moratuwa Engineering Research Conference

Family isn’t just blood – it’s IEEE too!

The IEEE Sri Lanka Section brought together its vibrant community on June 28th, 2025, for the much-anticipated Family Get-Together at Hotel Bourbon Grand, Pitipana. Graduate student members and above, along with their families, experienced a day filled with connection, collaboration, and pure joy from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

This wasn’t just another event – it was a testament to the strong bonds that unite the IEEE Sri Lanka Section family. The day buzzed with energy as members participated in outdoor and poolside games, cheered on teams during spirited tug-of-war competitions, and showcased their talents through singing and dancing performances. The atmosphere was electric with laughter, friendly competition, and genuine camaraderie.

Beyond the entertainment, the event served as a powerful networking platform where seasoned professionals mingled with emerging talents, fostering meaningful relationships in a relaxed setting. The delectable food, refreshments, and surprise giveaways kept everyone energized and excited throughout the day.

What made this gathering truly remarkable was its ability to bring together every generation – from the youngest family members enjoying the pool to senior members sharing their experiences. The event perfectly embodied the section’s commitment to building not just professional networks, but a supportive community that extends far beyond the workplace.
