IEEE Sri Lanka Section Chips Challenge Winner Shines on the Global Stage

Mr. Rameshkumar Rajinthan, winner of the Sri Lanka Chips Challenge, secured the Bronze Medal (3rd Place) at the 20th Annual International Microelectronics Olympiad, bringing global recognition to Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Chips Challenge was organized by the IEEE CASS-CEDA Sri Lanka Chapter under the IEEE Challenge Sphere competition series of the IEEE Sri Lanka Section. Following his national-level victory, Rajinthan was sponsored to represent Sri Lanka at the international competition held in Yerevan, Armenia.

The final results were announced on 18 November, 2025 at Engineering City, Yerevan, marking a proud milestone for Sri Lanka.

IEEE Sri Lanka Section Arduino Challenge Runners-Up Earn Global Technical Excellence Award

The Runners-Up team of the Sri Lanka Arduino Challenge 2025 achieved global recognition by winning the Technical Excellence Award at the IEEE Solid State Circuits Society Global Arduino Contest 2025.

The Sri Lanka Arduino Challenge was organized by the IEEE IES Sri Lanka Chapter in collaboration with the IEEE IES Student Branch Chapter of SLTC, under the Sri Lanka Challenge Sphere of the IEEE Sri Lanka Section. The runners-up team, “We Make It” from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, proudly represented Sri Lanka on the global stage.

SDG Sprints Workshop Series 02 | Focusing on Clean Water and Climate Sustainability

The SDG Sprints Workshop Series 02 was successfully conducted virtually on 29 November 2025, hosting 35 undergraduates and young professionals. The session continued the program’s core goal of preparing participants for the IEEE Solution Challenge by focusing on two critical global priorities: SDG 6 – Clean Water & Sanitation and SDG 13 – Climate Action.

The virtual format allowed the program to proceed seamlessly despite prevailing weather conditions, ensuring accessibility for participants from various regions. Dr. Manuri Perera (Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, UoC) provided a public health perspective on sustainable water management and equitable clean water access. In parallel, Ms. Avishka Sendanayake (Marie Curie Fellow, University of Catania) discussed the urgency of climate action and the role of community-led, climate-tech solutions.

Participants engaged in discussions and idea-generation exercises, fostering critical reflection on how young innovators can contribute to sustainable development through informed action and multidisciplinary collaboration. The program now moves forward, with fourteen teams already registered for the upcoming Solution Challenge.

IEEE INSL Provincial Competition | RUSL

The IEEE INSL Provincial Competition for the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (RUSL) Student Branch was successfully held virtually on 22 November 2025. Attracting around 40 attendees, the online competition provided a vital platform to encourage undergraduates to transform creative ideas into structured project proposals and gain real pitching experience.

Seven innovative teams presented their concepts during the session. The presentations were rigorously evaluated by an expert panel featuring Husni Mohamed, Lecturer, Faculty of Technology, and Ms. A.K.N.L. Aththanagoda, Lecturer, Department of Computing.

The event achieved its objective of strengthening entrepreneurial thinking, fostering collaboration, and building confidence among students. Through preparatory sessions and expert evaluation, the competition successfully provided a meaningful platform for young RUSL innovators to showcase their talents and secure their advancement to the national stage.

The Wayamba University Provincial Round of INSL 2025 was successfully held virtually on 21 November 2025. This provincial competition served as a vital platform for young entrepreneurs from the Wayamba University community to pitch their groundbreaking business ideas and secure a spot in the National Level INSL competition.

The event, which saw participation of around 30 individuals, featured an active judging panel composed of Eng. Lakshara Gunawardhana and Mr. Thilina Payagala, Lecturers, WUSL. They evaluated innovative business concepts, prototypes, and entrepreneurial skills across five pitching sessions.

The competition successfully achieved its goal of identifying top-performing teams while enhancing participants’ pitching and communication skills through constructive feedback. The event concluded by selecting teams to advance, highlighting the university’s strong culture of innovation and student-driven entrepreneurship.

The NSBM Provincial Round of INSL 2025 was successfully held virtually on 20 November 2025. This virtual competition provided an interactive platform for enthusiastic young innovators and emerging entrepreneurs from NSBM Green University to showcase their ideas.

The event, which involved around 30 participants, featured an expert judging panel: Mrs. Chathurma Wijesinghe (Lecturer, NSBM) and Mr. Akshitha Sriyanjith (COO/Co-Founder, Rotaframe Technology). They rigorously evaluated five pitching sessions focused on innovative business ideas and early-stage prototypes.

The competition successfully identified top-performing teams for the INSL National Level. Participants gained valuable insights, constructive feedback, and enhanced their pitching and presentation skills in a competitive environment, reinforcing NSBM’s dedication to fostering student entrepreneurship.

SDG Sprints Workshop Series 01 | Fostering Sustainable Innovation for Health and Education

The SDG Sprints Workshop Series 01 was successfully held on 15 November 2025 at NIBM City University, drawing 39 undergraduates and young professionals. This core phase of the SDG Sprints program, designed to prepare participants for the IEEE Solution Challenge, focused on two critical areas: SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 4 – Quality Education.

The workshop addressed prevailing challenges in Sri Lanka’s health and education sectors with expert contributions. Mr. Keerthi Kodithuwakku (Chairman & CEO, Jendo Innovations) shared insights on digital health innovations, while Mr. Kalimuthu Kulendra (Senior Manager, Room to Read) highlighted technology-enabled learning and improving educational accessibility.

The event successfully raised awareness and provided attendees with real-world context, case studies, and foundational knowledge. It empowered participants to identify challenges and conceptualize practical, low-cost solutions aligned with national priorities for sustainable development.

INSL Provincial Competition | University of Sri Jayewardenepura

The INSL 2025 Provincial Competition brought together the brightest minds from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura on November 15th. Held online via digital platform, the event featured 10 contestants who made it through the pitch deck evaluation stage. Three individual participants and two teams competed for a spot in the next round.

The competition provided students with a valuable platform to showcase their innovative ideas to an expert panel:
  • Mr. Adhisha Gammanpila – Founder & CEO of Feynman and USJ alumnus
  • Mrs. Chathma Ganguli – Tech Transfer Manager at USJ
The judges evaluated each presentation carefully and provided constructive feedback to help participants refine their concepts.

The event achieved its goal of selecting the top three contestants who will advance to the national level. Students gained practical experience in pitching their ideas and received guidance from industry professionals. This competition continues to nurture entrepreneurial thinking among university students across Sri Lanka.

IEEE Sri Lanka Section Drives Career Growth with Senior Member Elevation Workshop

The IEEE Sri Lanka Section successfully hosted the Senior Member Elevation Workshop on 11 November 2025 at SLIIT Malabe. The event was a key part of the Section’s Membership Development initiatives, aimed at professional recognition and career progression for eligible members.

The workshop provided comprehensive guidance on the eligibility criteria, the application process, and reference guidelines for elevation to the Senior Member grade. Key topics covered requirements such as the minimum 10 years of professional practice, 5 years of significant performance, and acceptable educational experience conversion.

Prof. Anuradha Jayakody led the session, which saw active engagement from 30 attendees, including academics and industry professionals. Notable outcomes included 17 participants beginning their applications during the session and 11 requesting follow-up support.

This high-impact workshop strengthens professional recognition and membership retention, fostering leadership development within the Section in alignment with Region 10 objectives.

INSL Provincial Competition | Kotelawala Defense University

Computing and engineering students from Kotelawala Defense University gathered online on November 8th for the INSL 2025 Provincial Competition. The event, held online at 8:00 PM, welcomed 11 participants eager to present their innovative solutions.

The competition featured two experienced judges from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura:
  • Dr. Budditha Hettige – Senior Lecturer, Department of Knowledge Engineering and Communication, USJ
  • Dr. Anuradha Ariyaratne – Senior Lecturer, Department of Computer Science, USJ
Each team delivered a 7-minute pitch followed by an 8-minute Q&A session, allowing for detailed discussions about their ideas.

Participants gained valuable experience in presenting their projects to academic professionals and received feedback to improve their proposals. The KDU INSL Ambassadors coordinated the event smoothly through a WhatsApp group, ensuring all candidates were well-prepared. This competition successfully identified promising teams ready to advance to higher-level INSL competitions while building an innovation culture at KDU.

The Uva Wellassa University Provincial Round of the IEEE INSL 2025 Provincial Competition was held online at 8:00 PM, bringing together around 20 undergraduate students to showcase their innovative business ideas and prototypes. The Industry Connect Session with MAS Unichela was successfully hosted by StudPro 8.0 on 30 October 2025 and 6 November 2025, at the MAS Unichela facility in Panadura. The event accommodated 30 undergraduates, selected from 163 registrants, providing them with essential, firsthand industry exposure.

The participants gained insights into MAS Holdings’ operations, innovative work culture, and sustainability-driven practices. Discussions focused on current industry trends, the evolving skill demands, and career pathways available within the leading apparel and manufacturing company.

The session successfully bridged the gap between academia and industry. The session focused on understanding the operations and workflow of a leading broadcast corporation, including how media content is produced and distributed. Discussions covered current industry trends, innovations, and emerging technologies in media and broadcasting. Speakers highlighted the crucial skills and competencies required for successful careers in the sector, emphasizing the alignment of academic learning and creative abilities with industry demands.

Mr. Amod Sahabandu, a Consultant AI Engineer at Arcadea Group, guided participants on Setting Up & Building Core Functions. Key learning areas included managing LLM platforms and API keys, understanding core configuration parameters like Temperature and Max Tokens, and establishing a professional development pipeline using Git and UV installation.

The session featured a crucial hands-on development segment, demonstrating how to build a functional AI Research Agent. This practical exercise solidified participants’ understanding of agentic workflows, preparing them to create reliable, scalable AI agent systems for real-world applications.

Sri Lanka AI Challenge 2025 | Final Pitch Elevates Local Innovation

The Final Pitch of the Sri Lanka AI Challenge 2025 (SLAIC) was successfully held on 19 October 2025 at Trace Expert City, Colombo, bringing together 43 university student finalists. The event marked the culmination of the challenge, evaluating the creativity, technical accuracy, and real-world applicability of AI agentic solutions.

Finalist teams pitched fully functional AI solutions addressing two real-world use cases: a Smart Shopping Assistant or a Smart Transit Companion. Projects were rigorously evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges, including Mr. Dinusha Kornkaduwa (Augustory Corp), Mr. Hansa Perera (Nagarro), Mr. Kanishka Wijayasekara (Zone24x7), and Mr. Kanishka Hewageegana (IWMI).

Following the pitches, Team TechBloom secured first place, Team Jaspern were runners-up, and Team Blue Water were second runners-up. The challenge received crucial support from partners, including Zone24x7 as the Gold Partner and Augustory Corp as the Venture Studio Partner.

The success of SLAIC 2025 reaffirms the nation’s commitment to advancing AI capabilities and empowering young innovators. Discussions are already underway with Augustory Corp to explore development opportunities for the top five teams.

AI Agent Mastery Session 01 | Designing the AI Agent Architecture

The inaugural session of the AI Agent Mastery Talk Series, a flagship initiative by AI Driven SL and IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka, was successfully held on 18 October 2025, via Zoom, gathering 132 technology and AI enthusiasts. The event, part of a three-month series, was organized in collaboration with IEEE Student Branches from the University of Peradeniya, Uva Wellassa University, and KDU.

Mr. Pasan Jayawardene (Insighture) led the session, focusing on ‘Designing the AI Agent: From Problem to Architecture.’ He introduced the limitations of basic Large Language Models (LLMs) and highlighted the necessity of advanced agentic systems for achieving autonomy, reliable outputs, and multi-step reasoning in real-world applications.

The discussion covered key architectural concepts, detailing how augmented LLMs integrate external tools, retrieval systems, and memory components to enhance functionality. Live demonstrations showcased practical AI agentic workflows and decision-making pipelines.

This session successfully equipped participants with foundational knowledge to move toward designing scalable and efficient AI-driven solutions.

The session gave participants firsthand exposure to advanced factory processes, including CAD/CAM pipelines, composite manufacturing, automation systems, and Quality Assurance (QA) workflows. Through guided floor walkthroughs and demonstrations, students connected academic theory with real-world technical practices.

Constructive Q&A sessions with the engineering teams clarified required skills, safety procedures, and career pathways in modern manufacturing and automation roles. The visit enhanced industry readiness, strengthened ties between academia and industry, and identified clear opportunities for internships and future collaborations.
