
September was a month of pride and accomplishment for the IEEE Sri Lanka Section. The highlight of the month was the IEEE Sri Lanka Section SYW Congress 2025, the Section’s flagship event that brought together students, young professionals, and women in engineering from across the country. The Congress also hosted the prestigious IEEE Sri Lanka Section Awards 2025, where the Student Organizational Units (OUs) belonging to the Section were recognised for their outstanding contributions and unwavering dedication to advancing IEEE’s mission.

Innovation for Sustainability – IEEE Sri Lanka Section Students | Young Professionals | Women in Engineering Congress 2025

The month of September was truly special for the IEEE Sri Lanka Section, as it marked one of the biggest events of the year, the IEEE Sri Lanka Section SYW Congress 2025. The event was held from 26th to 28th September at Jie Jie Beach Hotel, Panadura, in collaboration with IEEE Sri Lanka Section Students, Young Professionals, and Women in Engineering under the theme “Innovation for Sustainability”.
Around 200 delegates joined this three-day event, including graduates, young professionals, industry experts, and academics, for an unforgettable experience filled with learning, collaboration, and inspiration. The congress aimed to empower innovators, promote sustainability, and strengthen global professional networks in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The congress commenced with Mr. Uvindu Kodikara, Chair of SYWC 2025, delivering the keynote address titled “Empowering Innovation for Sustainability,” followed by Prof. S. Vasanthapriyan, Chair of the IEEE Sri Lanka Section, who spoke on “From Vision to Reality: Milestones of IEEE in Sri Lanka – 2025.” Keynote addresses were also delivered by Dr. Subodha Charles, Prof. Ruwan Gopura, Prof. Roshan G. Ragel, Dr. Rajanikanth Aluvalu, Mr. M. Sai Prashanth, Dr. Syed Muzahir Abbas, Mr. Hwa Chiang LEO, and Mr. Ashok Narayan Tripathi. In addition, several IT and BPM leaders, IEEE Sri Lanka Section Ex-Co members, and IEEE R10 officials shared their valuable insights.
The event also featured IEEE Handaawa, Awards Night, and cultural activities, creating a perfect balance between learning and celebration. Supported by multiple IEEE societies and partners, the IEEE SL SYW Congress 2025 stood as a remarkable celebration of sustainability, innovation, and teamwork, truly embodying the spirit of “Advancing Technology for Humanity.

The IEEE Sri Lanka Section Award Ceremony 2025 – Phase 01 was held on September 27th at Jie Jie Beach Hotel, Panadura, marking one of the most anticipated highlights of the IEEE Sri Lanka Section SYW Congress 2025 (SLSYWC). Networking for Success | Forge Your Icon – Session 07 by IEEE Young Professionals

The IEEE Young Professionals hosted the virtual session “Networking for Success” on 21st September 2025, with 62 participants, empowering undergraduates, graduates, and young professionals to develop purposeful networking skills for career growth. Organised under StudPro 8.0 by IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka, the event was held in collaboration with the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka (SEUSL) as the technical partner. The keynote speaker, Ms. Dona Balasuriya – Attorney-at-Law, Lecturer, and Corporate Trainer, shared insights on building authentic professional relationships, maintaining effective communication, and enhancing personal branding. She emphasized the strategic use of LinkedIn and professional events to convert connections into meaningful opportunities such as internships and collaborations. Through interactive discussions, participants learned practical approaches for initiating and maintaining long-term professional relationships. The session enhanced participants’ confidence and strategic thinking, highlighting networking as a key driver of personal and career development in today’s professional landscape.

Bridging Academia and Industry | STUDPRO 8.0: Industry Connect Session with Kelanitissa Power Station by IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka

The IEEE Young Professionals, in collaboration with the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), organised an Industry Connect Session on 16th September 2025, at the Kelanitissa Combined Cycle Power Station in Colombo. The event brought together 40 undergraduates from universities across Sri Lanka, offering them a unique opportunity to explore real-world power generation operations and industry practices. The session aimed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industrial application by providing firsthand exposure to the workings of a national-level combined cycle power plant. Participants gained valuable insights into combined cycle technology, control room operations, and national grid integration, deepening their understanding of Sri Lanka’s energy sector. Experienced CEB engineers shared their expertise on operational safety, energy efficiency, and professional development opportunities, inspiring students to consider careers in the power and energy field. The visit reinforced StudPro 8.0’s mission of connecting students with industry experts, fostering practical learning, and shaping future-ready engineers.

Restoring Hope Through Clean Water | RO Filter Renovation at a Vavuniya School by IEEE SIGHT SL

IEEE Sri Lanka Section SIGHT successfully completed the renovation of the RO filter system at Saivapragasa Ladies College, Vavuniya, under the phase 6 of the ongoing Filter of Hope initiative. Conducted on 5th September 2025, the project involved replacing the existing membrane with a new Vontron unit and installing a 200GPD pump, restoring the system’s full functionality and long-term efficiency.
This renovation ensures that students and the surrounding community have continuous access to safe and clean drinking water, improving health and well-being while promoting sustainable living. With an investment of USD 945.66, the project exemplifies IEEE SIGHT’s dedication to practical humanitarian engineering that addresses real community needs.
Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 6, Clean Water and Sanitation, this effort highlights the organization’s continued commitment to fostering sustainable, community-centered technological solutions across Sri Lanka.
