IEEE WIE Distinguished Volunteer & Mentor | Mr. Madushan Ilangakoon Featured in Global Recognition

The IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Distinguished Volunteer & Mentor recognition celebrates individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to empowering women and promoting diversity in STEM. On October 17, 2025, Mr. Madushan Ilangakoon (Senior Lecturer–NVQ, Public Speaker, IEEE Global Volunteer) was featured in the IEEE WIE Distinguished Volunteer & Mentor Series for his significant global contributions through innovative community engagement. His WIE Puzzler Project connects people worldwide through creative puzzles and challenges, increasing digital engagement and strengthening IEEE WIE’s global presence.

This recognition highlights Mr. Ilangakoon’s dedication to fostering collaboration, mentorship, and creative learning across international IEEE communities. His leadership in mentoring young professionals and promoting inclusivity within the IEEE WIE network continues to inspire members globally.

IEEE Day Celebration 2025 | Celebrating Unity and Progress Together

The IEEE Sri Lanka Section celebrated IEEE Day 2025 on October 8th through a collaborative event organized with the Sri Lanka Section Students Activities Committee (SLSAC). The celebration united the IEEE community to honour innovation and global collaboration.

Prof. Anuradha Jayakody, Chair of Membership Development at IEEE Sri Lanka Section, delivered an inspiring session on “IEEE Membership Insights & Benefits,” emphasizing how IEEE Day celebrates unity where thousands move with one vision. He highlighted how membership shapes careers through collaboration and continuous learning, connecting members across the island.

Student branches across universities extended the celebration, with events held on October 7th and 8th at NSBM Green University, University of Jaffna, Kotelawala Defence University, University of Peradeniya, and Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. The IEEE Student Branch of the University of Vocational Technology celebrated on October 14th, featuring Prof. Vasanthapriyan, Chair of IEEE Sri Lanka Section, as the Chief Guest.

Competitions

IEEE Sri Lanka Section Soars at IEEEXtreme 19.0 | A Celebration of Excellence, Unity, and Passion

The IEEE Sri Lanka Section demonstrated outstanding innovation, collaboration, and unity through its remarkable performance at IEEEXtreme 19.0, the world’s premier 24-hour global programming competition. With over 1,650 participants, the Section proudly secured the third-highest participant count globally, reflecting the passion and commitment of Sri Lanka’s vibrant IEEE community.

More than 100 volunteers, including ambassadors, proctors, and coordinators, contributed to the event’s success by fostering a spirit of teamwork and learning. Across 23 universities, students showcased their coding excellence and enthusiasm, with nearly 42% of all IEEE student members in Sri Lanka participating this year.

Leading up to the main event, over 10 PreXtremes equipped participants with technical skills and confidence, followed by 12 onsite competitions filled with excitement and collaboration.

This collective achievement celebrates more than numbers, it symbolizes unity, growth, and innovation. The IEEE Sri Lanka Section proudly recognises every volunteer, student, and mentor whose dedication made IEEEXtreme 19.0 an inspiring success.

Events

SDG Sprints Launchpad | Empowering Innovation for a Sustainable Future by IEEE SL SIGHT

The SDG Sprints Launchpad, held on October 31, 2025 at TRACE Expert City, marked the beginning of a national initiative by IEEE Sri Lanka Section SIGHT to promote technology-driven solutions for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event brought together professionals, academics, and innovators to explore how humanitarian technology can address pressing social and environmental challenges.

Distinguished speakers included Professor Mohamed Essaaidi, Chair of IEEE SIGHT; Dhammika Marasinghe, Immediate Past Chair of IEEE Sri Lanka Section; Sewwandie Nanayakkara, Chair of IEEE Sri Lanka Section SIGHT; and Ms. Sasela Dassanayake, Director (Development) at the Sustainable Development Council of Sri Lanka.

Following the Double Diamond Design Thinking Framework, SDG Sprints will guide participants from research to design and implementation, culminating in a national Solution Challenge. The programme aims to inspire sustainable innovation and empower communities through impactful, real-world technological solutions.

NENASA STEM Workshop | Inspiring Young Innovators in Mirigama by IEEE SL SIGHT

The Nenasa STEM Education Workshop, held on September 15, 2025 at Siri Vidyakkeerthi Kanishta Vidyalaya, Mirigama, offered students a hands-on learning experience in science and technology. Focusing on key STEM concepts such as light, electricity, and circuits, the session encouraged active participation and practical understanding.

A highlight of the event was the creation of glowing badges using simple electronic components, giving students the satisfaction of building functional devices themselves. This engaging activity transformed theory into practice, making learning both meaningful and memorable.

Throughout the workshop, teamwork and creativity were at the core as students collaborated to solve problems, share ideas, and connect science to everyday life. The Nenasa initiative continues to inspire young minds, fostering curiosity, confidence, and a passion for innovation that paves the way for a more technologically empowered future.
