Enriching Lives with Clean Water: IEEE SIGHT’s Impact in Sri Lanka
Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, yet many communities in Sri Lanka
continue to struggle with this essential need. Aligned with IEEE SIGHT’s global mission to use
technology for social good, the IEEE Sri Lanka Section SIGHT has been actively working to
provide sustainable clean water solutions in underserved areas.
In Q4 2024 and Q1 2025, two successful "Filter of Hope" projects were implemented.
Filter of Hope Phase 3 was conducted at Sumangala Maha Vidyalaya in Anuradhapura, in
collaboration with the IAS Sri Lanka Chapter, and Phase 4 at Madukanda Vidyalaya in
Vavuniya. These projects aimed to provide safe drinking water to students and teachers,
significantly improving their health and well-being.

The initiatives focused on installing advanced water filtration systems, assessing community needs, and educating local populations on water safety and filter maintenance. The projects also sought to strengthen partnerships with Tech4Good, NGOs, and corporate sponsors. Engaging with the community and involving local volunteers, school staff, and stakeholders played a key role in ensuring the long-term sustainability of these efforts.

Through these initiatives, IEEE Sri Lanka Section SIGHT has demonstrated its commitment to using technology for positive social impact, benefiting students and their families. As the section continues to explore new opportunities, it envisions a future where every individual has access to clean, safe drinking water, empowering communities to thrive and creating lasting change.
