Rather than merely representing a flaw, a software bug can serve as a critical opportunity to enhance system security. This perspective was emphasised during 'CyberSec 5.0', a virtual session held on 2 July, 2025, at 7:30 PM. Organised by the IEEE Computer Society Sri Lanka Chapter in collaboration with the IEEE Sri Lanka Cybersecurity Group, the event offered valuable insights into the proactive role of cybersecurity in addressing software vulnerabilities.
Mr. Samitha Madhusanka (Senior Security Consultant at EY) guided the audience through practical talks and live demonstrations, showing how penetration testing intentionally searches and finds hidden risks before attackers find them. His live demos showed how fixing these flaws turns ‘bugs’ into tools for stronger security. The session explored AI-driven cyber threats, emerging hacking techniques, and methods used by attackers to bypass security defenses. Participants gained practical knowledge on identifying these threats and enhancing their protective measures, thereby contributing to strengthening Sri Lanka’s position in global digital security.

The IEEE Communications Society Sri Lanka Chapter hosted an inspiring virtual session on 3 July, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, focusing on security issues in Open Radio Access Networks (OpenRAN) and emerging trends in Distributed Ledger Applications (DLA). The event drew strong interest from the local tech community, underscoring the importance of these topics in advancing safer and more reliable communication systems.

More than 75 student leaders from 22 universities gathered at Ramada Colombo on 6 July, 2025, for the IEEE Industry Applications Society Sri Lanka Chapter Congress under the theme “The AI Shift: Reimagining Sri Lanka’s Industrial Future.
The day began with an interactive workshop by Dr. Srikanth Vasudevan Pillai, Chair of the IEEE IAS Chapter and Membership Department, who spoke on strengthening local chapters and the value of volunteerism. Prof. A.G. Buddhika P. Jayasekara from the University of Moratuwa then shared insights from his IEEE journey, highlighting how leadership and hands-on experience can shape the engineers of tomorrow.
Student Branch teams from six IAS branches showcased their recent projects and future goals, followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion featuring Mr. Hansa Perera (Nagarro), Prof. A.S. Karunananda (University of Moratuwa), and Mr. Dehan Vithana (MAS Intimates), moderated by Dr. Madhawa Herath. The panel explored AI in enterprise systems, AI education, and the ethical use of data.
Dr. Ajith Pasqual, Founder and CEO of Paraqum Technologies, ended the main speeches by sharing ideas about new inventions and the growing link between academia and industry. The congress created opportunities for collaboration and inspired young engineers to dream big for Sri Lanka’s future.

The session was conducted by Ms. Anupama Pathirage, Director and Head of Engineering Integration at WSO2, who shared her career journey and leadership experiences.
The audience included students, young professionals, and engineers who received practical advice on leadership development. Ms. Pathirage discussed challenges faced by women in the technology sector and guided overcoming barriers, improving communication skills, and making effective decisions.

On 16 July, 2025, the IEEE Computer Society Sri Lanka Chapter brought together students and fresh graduates for an online workshop titled “Crafting a Professional CV and LinkedIn Profile.” In just two hours, participants learned valuable strategies to stand out in a competitive job market.
The session was led by Ms. Chanukah Gunawardena, Senior Manager for Talent Acquisition and Employer Branding at IFS. She explained the key elements of an effective CV and a LinkedIn profile that speak directly to recruiters. Rather than simply listing qualifications, she encouraged participants to tell their own story by showcasing unique strengths and achievements.
Through practical examples and clear guidance, Ms. Gunawardena revealed what employers truly look for and how to present skills in a way that captures attention.
This workshop reflected the IEEE mission to support members not only in developing technical expertise but also in building a strong personal brand. Attendees left with the confidence to present themselves professionally and compellingly.

On Saturday, 19th July 2025, biomedical engineers and students gathered for the very first TechMed Talks, organized by the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) Sri Lanka Chapter. The session, “Inside the Human Machine: Anatomy & Physiology for Biomedical Engineers,” was conducted by Dr. Sajith Edirisinghe, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
The virtual event explored how understanding anatomy and physiology can guide the design of medical devices and improve healthcare solutions. Analog IC Student Design Contest 2025: Precision Sparks Innovation

The IEEE CASS CEDA Joint Sri Lanka Chapter, in collaboration with Skill Surf, launched the Analog IC Student Design Contest 2025, providing a hands-on platform for Sri Lanka’s student engineers. Participants were challenged to design low-voltage, low-area operational amplifiers for low-frequency analog signals (1–10 kHz), bringing real-world IC design into the academic space.
The contest stood out for its use of the open-source SKY130 PDK, giving students a practical experience typically reserved for industry professionals. Both undergraduate and graduate students could participate, either individually or in teams of two, with at least one member enrolled in a Sri Lankan institution. The competition timeline began with registration closing on 25th July, 2025, followed by a demo workshop on August 2nd, and concluded with design submissions due by August 22nd.
By combining technical skill, creativity, and precision, this first-of-its-kind contest fostered innovation at the circuit level. In July 2025, the IEEE Sri Lanka Section was awarded USD 400 by the IEEE Region 10 Membership Development Committee (MDC) to support initiatives aimed at boosting membership growth and retention across the Asia-Pacific region. The funding call, launched in June 2025, invited sections to submit innovative plans to enhance member recruitment, engagement, and participation.
Sri Lanka was selected among six sections from a total of 12 submissions, recognizing its strategy to implement physical engagement activities for members. The funded initiatives will run from 23 July to 25 November 2025, designed to improve member experience and encourage ongoing involvement.
Proposals were evaluated based on objectives, feasibility, creativity, potential impact, and alignment with Region 10 goals. Other sections awarded include Islamabad, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Pune, and Delhi, reflecting a regional commitment to active membership development. Graduate student members and above, along with their families, experienced a day filled with connection, collaboration, and pure joy from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
This wasn't just another event – it was a testament to the strong bonds that unite the IEEE Sri Lanka Section family. The day buzzed with energy as members participated in outdoor and poolside games, cheered on teams during spirited tug-of-war competitions, and showcased their talents through singing and dancing performances. The atmosphere was electric with laughter, friendly competition, and genuine camaraderie.
Beyond the entertainment, the event served as a powerful networking platform where seasoned professionals mingled with emerging talents, fostering meaningful relationships in a relaxed setting.
