Empowering Communities: Remote Sensing for Social Good Webinar
On February 22, 2025, the IEEE GRSS Sri Lanka Chapter partnered with the IEEE GRSS
BIT Mesra Student Branch Chapter (SBC) to host the Remote Sensing for Social Good
webinar, a pioneering cross-border event featuring experts from India, Sri Lanka, and the
USA. The event highlighted the critical role of geospatial technologies in addressing
societal challenges, emphasizing urban resilience, environmental sustainability, disaster
risk reduction, and sustainable development goals (SDGs).

The sessions covered various topics, from 4D flood management and land surface
temperature analysis to geospatial intelligence for policy-making and AI-driven disaster
mitigation. Speakers, including N.N. Salghuna, Mousiki Kar, Rumjhum Ray Chaudhuri,
Badra Herath, and Sneha Kour, shared insights on integrating remote sensing with
emerging technologies for inclusive development. A networking session facilitated
discussions on the standardization of socioeconomic data in remote sensing, encouraging
deeper engagement among 42 participants.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks and a virtual group photo, marking a
significant milestone in geospatial technology-driven humanitarian initiatives. Attendees
expressed enthusiasm for future collaborations, reinforcing the growing impact of remote
sensing in social development and sustainability.
