IEEE PES workshop, Colombo, Sri Lanka

Energy Management Systems (EMS) have been deployed for decades at utility control centers to monitor and manage the electricity grid in real-time. Today these EMS capabilities are poised to be enhanced quite dramatically with growth of synchrophasor PMU measurements. Taking these upcoming trends in the Power Energy sector, the IEEE Power and Energy society organized the workshop on the topic Evolution of EMS Control Centers and Synchrophasor Measurements. This took place on 12th September 2014 at Light House Gallery, Colombo.

An eminent speaker, Dr. Jay Giri, the Director of Power Systems Technology and Strategic Initiatives at Alstom Grid’s NMS business in Redmond delivered the key note speech at this event. Moreover, Industrial and University professionals who are involved in power sector in Sri Lanka graced this occasion.

The session covered some topics including,

  • The primary functions of a modern EMS
  • Impact of growth of microgrids, renewables and distributed generation on the EMS
  • Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) and synchrophasor measurements
  • Integration of synchrophasor PMU data
  • Wide Area Monitoring (WAMS)
  • Practical examples of utilities where such advanced tools are deployed
